Take Action Tuesday - October 10, 2017

It’s Take Action Tuesday and International Day of the Girl… Eve!

October 11th, (yes…that’s tomorrow) is observed around the world and founded by the United Nations to get people talking about girls - their challenges, needs, options, opportunities and the possibility of a world to come where every girl reaches her full potential. CARE has been part of that conversation for decades.

International Day of the Girl (IDG) promotes girls’ empowerment, rights and voices everywhere that decisions about their lives are being discussed. It’s about letting the world’s 1.1 billion girls, be girls; not housekeepers, factory workers, brides, prostitutes, mothers or second-class citizens.

CARE is especially eager to discuss this year’s IDG theme: EmPOWER Girls: Before, during and after crises. Meeting the needs of adolescent girls is central to CARE’s mission to eradicate poverty and promote human rights because when you intervene in the life of a girl, you change the trajectory of her entire life, her family’s lives and the wellbeing of her entire community.

This year millions of girls are facing famines, droughts, natural disasters, violent conflicts, and gender-based, religious and political persecution. These conditions have forced them into crowded, desperate refugee settings where gender-based violence and oppression are common. This year’s International Day of the Girl (IDG) on October 11 marks the beginning of a yearlong effort to call attention and action to the challenges and opportunities girls face before, during, and after crises.

For this Take Action Tuesday, we’re jumping the gun and getting started a day early.

Here’s what you can do to celebrate International Day of the Girl Eve with CARE if you have:

· 5 minutes: Post on social media (tag @CAREorg and @CAREActionNow) that you’re celebrating IDG and let friends know if you’re hosting or attending any IDG events. If you’re hosting, make sure it’s listed on the CARE Action International Day of the Girl page so other people in your area can join you.

· 10 minutes: Sign up to host a last-minute CARE Social Supper for friends, family and your usual Wednesday crew and help raise awareness about the challenges girls face and the potential they have to change the world. Sign up today!

· 1 hour: Actually, we want you to do this one tomorrow – Download and share tomorrow’s brand new CARE Action podcast episode with Congressman Dwight Evans about his learning tour with CARE, food security in the U.S. and around the world and the contributions girls’ empowerment makes towards creating a better world.
