In 1945, CARE embarked on a mission to deliver life-saving supplies to war-torn communities in Europe. Since then, we have stood by the American principle that we must do all that we can to support the most marginalized communities, especially refugees and those seeking a life free of violence. Now more than ever, refugees need our support to ensure their rights and safety aren’t forgotten. Across the globe, a record number of men, women and children are fleeing their homes due to war, persecution and violence. We cannot slam the door on the world’s most vulnerable who seek safety in our nation. We must come together and stand up for refugee families everywhere. Now is not the time to turn our backs on our time-honored legacy of openness and inclusion.

Here’s how you can do your part to ensure the rights and the safety of refugees now.

If you have:

30 seconds: Sign our petition and show your support for refugees. Share the petition through social media to encourage your friends and family to do the same.

5 minutes: Call your elected officials and express your commitment to the rights and protection of all refugees. Find your Representative here and Senators here.

Not sure what to say? Try something like this:

Hello, my name is _____ and I am a voter in your district. I am calling to express my support for refugee families. Given the level of displacement in the world today, it is more important than ever that the U.S. lead in the response to this crisis, including by providing humanitarian support and continuing to resettle the most vulnerable individuals based on need, not on race, religion or nationality. The Administration’s Executive Order on refugees will have terrible consequences on the lives of thousands of people. This is not a policy that I support. I am asking you to publically speak out as a leader in opposition to this policy and show your support for the critical programs that aid displaced families fleeing their homes in search of safety.

An afternoon or evening: Volunteer locally with a refugee resettlement office or refugee rights organization. Find a local office here. The needs of these organizations differ from community to community, so make sure to give them a call and see how you can be the most useful!

None of these options suit you? Find more opportunities at the Refugee Council USA’s website and through the International Rescue Committee’s toolbox.

If we all do our part, we can ensure that the rights of refugees are upheld. The time to act is now.
