Take Action Tuesday: December 5, 2017

It’s Take Action Tuesday with five days remaining in the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign.  From Nov. 25th to Dec. 10th, CARE, along with hundreds of organizations and countries, is shining a spotlight on gender-based violence (GBV) and violence against women.

Throughout this campaign we’ve looked at the devastating impact GBV makes on women’s lives all over the world but we’ve also heard about the resilience and determination women demonstrate, even in the face of trauma, when they’re offered the right support. These are the women who inspire CARE’s work because we know they can change the world -- and a big part of the change we're seeking together is a world where all can live a life free from violence.

CARE keeps gender empowerment and the elimination of GBV at the heart of everything we do to eradicate poverty worldwide. We know that when women are empowered to live to their full potentials and free from violence, they’re better able to support themselves and contribute to their families’ and communities’ wellbeing.

Ending GBV in all its forms may seem like an overwhelming, even impossible, goal. But what we see every day in every corner of the globe is that determined advocates have the power to make real, lasting change, even when that change comes one small step at a time. That’s why, for this Take Action Tuesday, we’re keeping the spotlight on GBV and #16days of Activism but we’re keeping our ‘asks’ short and to the point. Here’s how you can help if you have:

  • 1 minute:  Watch and share this video from our friends at International Rescue Committee (IRC) about the fearless, ambitious, and fabulous girls all over the world who are most at risk for GBV. In a crisis, pre-teen and teenage girls are often the first to be harmed and the last to be protected. They are most at risk of facing forced marriage, dropping out of school, and violence. This video shows what happens at this crucial point in their lives that can change everything.
  • 2 minutes: Sign the Petition to Congress to Pass the International Violence Against Women Act. Then share it on social media and tag three friends asking them to sign too.
  • 5 minutes: Call your Members of Congress and tell them that you are a CARE supporter and their constituent, and that you want them to support and pass the International Violence Against Women Act (S-2120).
