Take Action Tuesday, August 15, 2017

8/15/17

It’s Take Action Tuesday and we’re gearing up for World Humanitarian Day.  Yeah, we know…it’s not until Saturday, August 19th, but here at CARE and CARE Action, it’s kind of a big deal.

World Humanitarian Day (WHD) pays tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service and offers support to people affected by crises around the world. This year, more people are facing crises than at any other time in our history. At the same time, we’re facing unprecedented cuts in funding for humanitarian aid and a political climate that doesn’t appear to value support for foreign assistance as much as CARE does.

We know that humanitarians are really just people with big hearts, brilliant minds and bravery on tap. They’re people like Bushra Aldukhainah, area manager for CARE International in Yemen. When bombs dropped within miles of her home, she grabbed her son and her cellphone and ran for their lives, while simultaneously making calls and coordinating emergency responses for other families and coworkers.  We’ll be honoring WHD because people like Bushra and those she’s helping deserve a shout-out at the top of our lungs.

This year’s theme for WHD is #NotATarget and it calls attention to the fact that civilians caught in conflict are not targets. They’re victims, survivors, refugees and humanitarians in their own communities. CARE Action knows that everybody has to step up and advocate for the most vulnerable people caught in war zones and demand that world leaders do everything they can to protect innocent children, women, families and communities. You’re ready to help, right?  Here’s what you can do if you have:

5 minutes:  Watch this video from the United Nations about Children in Conflict in Syria. Then share it with anyone you know who cares about kids.

15 minutes:  Browse the International Rescue Committee’s website, learn more about how the Trump administration’s travel ban impacts families seeking refuge and then sign their petition to Stand With Refugees.

1 hour:  Listen to this episode of the CARE Action podcast with Bushra Aldukhainah and find out what it really means to be a humanitarian. Then, head on over to iTunes, Stitcher or wherever you download your podcasts and leave us a great review.
