In a First, CARE Action Running Ads Supporting US Congressional Candidates

WASHINGTON—CARE Action, the 501(c)(4) advocacy arm of the global humanitarian and development organization CARE, is running digital ads in support of congressional candidates from both sides of the aisle with a proven record of fighting for strong US foreign assistance programs.

It is the first time in CARE’s 70-year history that one of its affiliate groups is backing candidates for political office in the United States. It is also an unprecedented move among major humanitarian and development organizations.

“Extraordinary times demand extraordinary measures,” says David Ray, CARE USA’s VP of Policy and Advocacy. “We’re taking this step because the United States’ historic bipartisan legacy as a global leader in humanitarian and development programs is under threat.

These members of Congress have a proven track record of defending vital, life-saving programs around the world – that’s why we’re calling this political ad buy an effort to ‘Defend the Defenders.’

When policymakers consistently stand up and do the right thing, it’s important that organizations like ours are willing to stand up in turn and acknowledge their political courage.”

The bipartisan list of candidates backed by CARE Action includes:

  • Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA)
  • Rep. Susan Brooks (R-IN)
  • Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY)
  • Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX)
  • Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA)
  • Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY)
  • Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN)
  • Rep. Hal Rogers (R-KY)
