Dear President Trump: Let Girls Learn

Dear President Trump: Let Girls Learn

5/2/17

It’s #TakeActionTuesday and CARE Action calls on Congress and the White House to Let Girls Learn

Yesterday’s news that the Trump Administration would be discontinuing “Let Girls Learn,” (a ground-breaking initiative that helps keep 62 million girls - half of them adolescents - in school) stands in direct opposition to everything America represents and everything we know to be essential for reducing poverty and creating both economic and national security. CARE Action knows that the fastest, most efficient, and effective way to push progress forward in developing countries and around the world is to educate girls. We also know the world tosses so many obstacles in front of girls that they need our help to let them learn.

“Let Girls Learn” uses a holistic approach to address the challenges girls face in accessing quality education, including gender inequality, violence, harassment, child marriage and early pregnancy. Dedicated resources and attention to these barriers gives millions of adolescent girls a genuine chance at realizing their full potential. “Let Girls Learn” harnessed U.S. Government agencies, talent and expertise to develop programs and strategies so that girls around the world had the support and tools to pursue educations and careers and help families and communities rise above poverty. The initiative also mobilized private sector partnerships, which multiplied the impact of federal dollars to reach more girls and raise awareness of girls’ educational needs here in the U.S.

CARE Action is calling on the Trump Administration to reconsider this harmful decision and its negative impact on the success and wellbeing of girls around the world and we’re asking you to help the. “Let Girls Learn” initiative and we want your help to spread the word about what this program does. It won’t take long. Here’s what you can do if you have:

5 minutes:  Head over to the Let Girls Learn website and add your name to their mailing list.

10 minutesCall your Member of Congress and tell him/her that you are a CARE supporter and that you object to any attempt to discontinue Let Girls Learn and you think that:

Gender equality and women’s empowerment is central to promoting America’s prosperity and security and must be considered hand-in-hand with our broader foreign policy goals.

15 minutes:  Grab a note card, post card or just scribble on the back of the nearest receipt and tell us why Letting Girls Learn is important to you.  Then, take a picture and post it on social media with the hashtag #LetGirlsLearn. Don’t forget to tag @CAREActionNow.

Let’s plaster the Internet with messages that tell the world who America really is.  Then, if you’re looking for more ways to advocate, listen to our newest podcast episode where we talk about food, security and advocacy with celebrity chef and CARE Ambassador Spike Mendelsohn.  Share it with your friends and help us grow our audience of world-changing advocates.
