Community Engagement for Change

What a week! I had the opportunity to engage with my community, not once but twice in advocacy efforts.  The first was a meeting with Congressman Jared Huffman who is my elected member of congress in California’s District 2.  The other was an event giving people the opportunity to know more about CARE and celebrate the International Day of the Girl.

CARE Action and RESULTS members met on October 14 with Rep. Huffman in his San Rafael office.  We were able to thank the Congressman in person for his support in a variety of areas that address the alleviation of extreme global poverty, most notably on co-sponsoring the Reach Every Mother and Child Act (H.R. 3706) which will help save the lives of 15 million children and 60,000 mothers around the world over the next four years by improving and scaling up proven, high-impact interventions, including access to voluntary family planning. We also thanked him for voting in favor of the recently passed Global Food Security Act (H.R. 1567).  In turn, he thanked us for our citizen advocacy and encouraged us to keep up the good work.

On October 8, I held an event a few days early to honor the October 11, International Day of the Girl.  Many of the attendees were fellow RESULTS advocates, so explaining the purpose of CARE Action for igniting a movement and producing positive change was an easy thing to relate to as RESULTS does the same.  Over a delicious lunch we discussed the importance of using our voices to directly influence policy makers by signing the petition that will be delivered to the next president of the United States.  With increased attention needed on the refugee crisis, especially for women and girls, it’s important that we speak up to better assist, protect and empower those who have been displaced.

I was honored to share these opportunities with people in my community.  Coming together and working together with other like-minded individuals inspires me to continue engaging for our global world.
