CARE Action Statement on Proposed Cuts to Foreign Aid in Central America

4/4/19

David Ray, Vice President of Policy and Advocacy for CARE USA, issued the following statement on the Trump administration's proposal to cut foreign assistance to El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala in Central America:

"If you want to stop people from fleeing a bad situation, the last thing you should do is make that situation worse. At the root of the Central American migrant crisis is violence, instability, and grinding poverty - the very things US development assistance to Central America helps to alleviate.

For decades, leaders of both parties have supported investment in these programs because they save lives, address the underlying causes of poverty, and represent American values.

The Trump Administration’s proposal to cut off these programs in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala is both inhumane and self-defeating. Congress should oppose this dangerous and counterproductive plan."

Send a letter to your members of Congress right now and urge them to reject this dangerous plan and protect foreign assistance in Central America.
